ORTB radio was created in 1975, following the merger of two previous radio stations: Radio Dahomey, which was founded in 1959 by the French colonial administration, and Radio Cotonou, which was launched in 1964 by the independent government of Dahomey, the former name of Benin. ORTB radio inherited the mission of informing, educating and entertaining the Beninese people, as well as promoting the national culture and identity.
